Feeling sick while in
Ok, it is Friday October 26th 2012.
We are on the edge of a major storm, and
major election in the states.
Here in Hamilton Ontario, I have
spent the better part of September and
October watching the black discharge
coming at me from Arcelor-Mittel's
stacks. Withing minutes it enters my
home, and with 2 Air Filter machines
running up my hydro bill, I still
taste it and cough. I can't breath.
Ever since AM took over the operations
of Dofasco's steel plant, I have had
breathing problems. The stack filters
are suppossed to be working, but they
are old, and so are the coke ovens.
The company makes a big deal about
giving out some money to a limited
number of local organizations. Good
for publicity. They usually do this
kind of thing just before they kill
the community from the way they
operate the plant.
If Dofasco workers could tell the
truth, you would hear how much they
hate and distrust the new owners. No
longer proud of the plant, they search
for other job optons. Elsewhere in the
World, Arcelor owned companys cut
I am told it won't matter what I do.
That the community is apathetic and
say they can't fight such a big
company. Others tell me AM knows
exactly what they allow out into the
community, and don't care.
I say..... call them on it. Tell as
many people you know what is going on,
and call the numbers listed on
this page. Publically out what is
going on. If each of us went after our
local polluters, all of us would

are tactics similar to Bush and Florida. Without
transparency how do Canadians know who really
won the election. . If the Harper Government
followed the procedures expected of Canadian
Government, long in the making of this Country,
more Canadians would feel proud of Harper.
Instead his decisions are made outside of
having to find out what is in your Countries

dangerous, and looking very much like the
Government regimes that are now failing all over
we are going backwards as far as Democracy.

The lower reaches
of the Mississippi River are being hit by
record floods, as detailed on our In Focus photography
blog. While there are thousands of news
stories about what's happening, I found
myself wanting basic
knowledge about how the Mississippi works
now. It's such a complex hybrid
human-natural system with a
deep and complex history that it's hard to
know where to start.
While Humans vs.

What is the
Mississippi River? It's not actually a silly
question. The Mississippi no longer fits the
definition a river as "a
natural watercourse flowing towards an
ocean, a lake, a sea, or another river."
Rather, the waterway has
been shaped in many ways, big and small, to
suit human needs. While it maybe not be
tamed, it's far from wild
-- and understanding the floods that are
expected to crest in Louisiana soon means understanding
dams, levees, and control structures as much
as rain, climate, and geography. From almost
the moment in the early
18th century when the French started to
build New Orleans, settlers built levees,
and in so doing, entered
into a complex geoclimactic relationship
with about 41 percent of the United States.

weeks ago the Crown made an offer on one

flood lands. They offered 26 million on
roughly 2400 acres of land that was
flooded around the 1830's. The
Haudenosaunee Negotiators put a working
group together to look at this offer,
break it down so to speak, and get it
ready for community consultation. Some
time frames have been established to bring
this information together, and
representatives of the confederacy, band
council, lands research office staff and
the Haudenosaunee research team are
working together preparing written hand
outs, web pages, phone lines, community
meetings and other mechanisms to ensure
that all of the people have an opportunity
to voice their concerns over this offer.
No one has accepted nor rejected the offer
and no one is going to without full
consultation of the community. The next
step is getting it out to community.
